As a school Speech Language Pathologist I target primarily articulation, language, and pragmatic/social thinking skills. Other areas of therapy may include fluency, voice, and augmentative communication. Articulation: Primarily targets pronunciation of sounds including /r, l, s, th, sh, ch/. Oral-motor activities are often implemented to increase awareness, strength, and range of motion necessary for sound production. Language: Skills include vocabulary development, categorization, synonyms/antonyms, analogies, auditory comprehension, and figurative language skills. Pragmatic or Social Thinking Skills: Targets social skills used during conversational exchanges including: eye contact, turn-taking, staying on topic, and using appropriate language. Voice: What is the Role of a School Speech Pathologist? -IDENTIFIES and EVALUATES students with speech, language, and related difficulties -PLANS and CONDUCTS activities to improve a student’s speaking, listening, and other language skills -COLLABORATES with parents, caregivers, teachers, and other professionals in understanding and meeting a student’s speech, language, and academic needs -MONITORS and documents the effectiveness of treatment and student progress -WRITES reports and does other required paperwork including development of Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s) -EDUCATES parents, teachers and administrators about communication development and disorders |
